Devotions for Dog Lovers – God Helps Us Change Bad Habits

Our springer spaniel Mary is very intelligent; she learns words quickly. Mary is also very friendly, wagging her stub of a spaniel tail and sashaying her rear-end when visitors come to the house. She is also attuned to people’s moods and she lays her head upon a knee when she feels someone needs comfort. Mary is also food motivated, and that gets her into trouble sometimes. She has a bad habit of “grazing” from the counter and from the table when no one is guarding the plates and platters. We have scolded her, and we have suspended her from the room, but her persistence doesn’t waver – she falls into the bad habit again the next day… sometimes the very next meal!

Training is supposed to curb a dog’s bad behavior. We have considered aluminum foil across the kitchen counter, but Mary isn’t afraid of noise. Mouse traps could be another deterrent, but we’re not into corporal punishment (although I have swatted her rear-end at times upon catching her “grazing”). Just like with people, changing a dog’s bad habits can be quite challenging.

I like Ding Dongs – I rejoiced when Hostess Cakes made a comeback. However, those sweet treats don’t like me … at least when it comes to piling on the pounds. As a middle-aged woman with slow metabolism, the bad habit of eating a box of Ding Dongs in a day is detrimental. Oreo cookies aren’t much better (the ones with “double-stuff” are fairly lethal weight-management wise!). Yet, I binge on these “bad for you foods” on occasion and I don’t like myself much afterward. Eating junk food is a bad habit I developed while working at a very stressful job and now that habit has me in a headlock. Just like Mary’s “grazing” has ramifications, so does my “binging.” I guess you could say my dog and I are both food motivated.

For Animal Get Involved By An Orange Or Custom Design T-shirt

Do you just love animals and want to do your part in protecting them? The month of April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month. This is in honor of the signing of the charter of the ASPCA in 1866. Throughout the country buildings and landmarks will be lighting up in the signature color and Going Orange for Animals. Each year, four million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters across the countrythats about one animal every eight seconds. We can all help by raising awareness; spaying or neutering your pet is single most important thing you can do to help prevent animal cruelty and the unnecessary deaths of healthy cats and dogs.

If you want to get involved, you can just wear an orange t-shirt or you can design a custom t-shirt of your own. There are several site out there you can use to create
custom t-shirts, but the best one I have found is LoveThoseshirts.com. They have several different styles of shirts, many of them in orange. Also, you can customize your own text to say what you really want and they have many animal pictures to choose from. Making your own custom t-shirts, doesnt actually save them of coarse, but it does raise awareness and that is where it starts.

In 2009 the National Spay/Neuter Tour, the ASPCA spayed or neutered more than 31,000 cats and dogs in New York Citys five boroughs alonedramatically decreasing the number of unwanted animals entering New York City shelters. We need more of the same all over the country. We can change things for our furry friends, if enough of us fight for them. I have designed custom t-shirts for the cause and handed them out to local pet shops and shelters hoping to get more people involved. You can help to prevent the deaths or abuse of countless animals too. Just think, if you help to get only one animal spayed or neutered, you are preventing possible future animals that could end up on the streets to fend for them selves. These animals are at high risk for disease, predation, being ran over, or abusive human behavior. One person can make a difference.

How To Select The Right Sized Bird Cage For A Pet Bird

Where a pet bird spends its time can have a huge impact on its well being. Selecting the proper sized bird cage for the birds enjoyment and safety is the first step to keeping a happy and healthy bird.

A general rule of thumb is that for large birds, the interior living space of the cage should be at least 1.5 times the birds adult wingspan in depth, width and height. So, if a Sun Conures wing span will be 11 inches, the cage should be at least 18 inches wide, high and deep. Of course, more space is always better for the bird, as long as the bars of the cage are appropriately spaced to avoid injury. Some smaller birds benefit from a flight cage that will allow them to really move around. Generally, having more space horizontally makes sense, as that allows more room for flight.

For small birds such as Finches, Parakeets and Lovebirds, bars should be spaced no more than 5/8 apart. For medium birds such as Conures, Senegal Parrots, and Cockatiels bars spaced from to 7/8 are appropriate. Large birds such as African Greys, Amazon Parrots, Cockatoos and Macaws should have cage bars spaced from 3/4 to 1 3/8 apart. Having properly spaced cage bars allows the bird to climb while reducing the risk of injury.

Pet lovers have a big responsibility in caring for them. Travelling with your cat can be a harrowing experience if the pet doesn’t have a shelter. This is why; cats’ carriers are essential. While at home too, these felines need a carrier with enough space and ventilation.

Importance of Dog Crates

A dog crate or kennel is indispensable for your pet; dogs feel secure in it and quickly learn that it is their own. Providing a protected environment for the dog is the owner’s responsibility. It is useful for travelling, training and comfortable living. Large dogs that are kept outdoors require well-built spacious kennels just like an outdoor cathouse for two or more cats. However, puppies need only small shelters so that they can have a cosy feeling. Without a crate, puppies may roam around the house when there is no one at home and hurt themselves. It can also be dangerous if they chew electrical wiring or eat poisonous plants. Keeping pups in kennels can solve this problem.
